Stantec is no stranger to the many challenges that come with working on large-scale multi-discipline architecture projects. The firm specializes in everything large–commercial skyscrapers, hospitals, education centers, colleges, universities, city centers, art museums. To overcome the many coordination and communication challenges of these large projects, BIM collaboration software in the cloud is key.

So, when they were selected by Shape Properties to design the Brentwood Mall residential towers, they knew that using BIM collaboration software would get them much farther than a more traditional approach.

The Brentwood project covers 8 acres of space that includes a parquet and 10 residential towers with over 40 floors. Because the project required a high amount of collaboration between multiple teams, Stantec needed to be able to communicate efficiently and share large complex Revit models across different offices.

They used Autodesk BIM 360 Team and Collaboration for Revit to provide a central cloud repository where they could share and view their Revit models, no matter where their team members were located.

Key benefits Stantec realized by using BIM collaboration software
  • Saved hours weekly by using the cloud to access project models in real-time, enabling them to track any updates from consultants or external partners right away.
  • Involved the client in the review process for the first time ever, they were able involve their client in the review process, using only a web browser.
  • Delivered their project efficiently using tracked version history and digitized comments.

How BIM collaboration software supercharged Stantec’s project workflows

The ease of virtual communication and collaboration in the cloud allowed the firm to track progress and gain consensus efficiently with their numerous team members and stakeholders. The client was even able to feel more included during the design collaboration stage.

As Aubrey Tucker, Associate and Regional BIM Lead at Stantec, pointed out,

“For the first time [the client] is a part of this process and they don’t have to have Revit installed. All they need is a web browser. They can log in, they can see the file, they can see the sheets and they can see how we’re coordinating the comments and exchanging ideas.”

Even better, Stantec was able to save time on project delivery, since they were able to cut down on hours lost organizing files and coordinating updates. Aubrey continues, “We’re saving a ton of time.  It would be hard to even say how much we’re saving because we’re doing so much more as well.”
