Anticipation: 6 New Apps from MEPcontent

MEPcontent has created an app pilot user group. Members gain access to up to 6 new apps, as detailed below.

From the MEPcontent website:

Product Line Placer for Valves

The PLiP valves gives you access to localized valves of leading manufacturers. Choosing a valve is easy through the relevant filters and search box. Another highlight of the app is the placing functionality, valves can be placed in open space or  on a pipe. When the valve is placed on a pipe, the system stays connected and the right fittings are added.

Free Armacell BIM Insulation Tool

From the Autodesk App Store:

The plug-in greatly simplifies the planning of technical insulation with BIM: unlike sanitary objects, for example, insulation has to be designed for equipment (e.g. pipes or ventilation ducts) which has already been planned. As the selection of the specific insulation material depends on various parameters (e.g. the diameter), it has to be entered actively by the user. Here errors often occur, because the data has to be looked up in the catalog and then entered manually.

In contrast, the new Armacell BIM plug-in accesses the data required directly in the model and supports the user in selecting and configuring products. Export from the Armacell product database allows the design process to be automated and the user does not need to make any manual entries. This makes the planning and design process simpler and faster and also reduces errors.

Free Macro to Batch Relinquish from Multiple Revit Files

From the What Revit Wants website:

Free Macro to Batch Relinquish All Mine from Multiple Revit Files

By Luke Johnson
January 10, 2018

If you have gone through a process of saving Central models, and you have forgotten to ‘Synchronize with Central’ before closing them for the first time, you may find that your user has all User Created Worksets checked out in those files. A quick recap:

  • Workshared Revit files use a persons Revit user name (sometimes linked to an Autodesk SSO login) to determine if things are checked out
  • If someone has a User Workset checked out, you won’t be able to edit it until they Relinquish. (Note: you can Detach and recreate the file but that is dangerous if you have multiple people working on something)

Basically I had a bunch of Revit files that had all User Worksets from certain usernames checked out. They were upgraded and they were Central files. All that was needed was a simple Open and Relinquish. As I didn’t want to do this manually, I sourced some macro code from here and adapted it for my situation.

Roundup – For Jan 8-14, 2018, New and Updated Revit Add-ins on the Autodesk App Store

The week of January 8, 2018 was a moderately busy one for Revit-related add-ins on the Autodesk App Store. Two new add-ins were published, and another eight were updated. Frustratingly, there were nearly four times as many apparently false updates as there were legitimate ones.

For new add-ins, cove.tool is for exporting building geometry to cove.tool projects for energy analysis, and Export Shared Parameters is for exporting multiple shared parameters to a shared parameter file.

For updated add-ins, rvt2skp and Bonus Tools received relatively significant updates.

Opinion: 5 Game-Changing Software Plugins for BIM Engineers

From the VIATechnik website:

5 Game-Changing Software Plugins for BIM Engineers

By Jesse Huynh
January 8, 2018

What’s in your VDC toolbox? These five BIM plugins will help take your productivity to the next level.

Leading AEC design software like Navisworks and Revit are, of course, incredibly powerful and robust platforms in their own right; however, any seasoned VDC designer or BIM engineer knows that it’s the plugins that unlock the full potential of these platforms and maximize productivity. While every project will have different needs and, as a result, require its own special blend of software and plugins to maintain efficiency, there are a handful of applications that are pretty much always useful — regardless of application or industry. Below, I’ve outlined some of my favorite plugins that I use to boost productivity and client satisfaction in all of my projects.

Giant-Size Roundup – For Dec 11, 2017 - Jan 7, 2018, New and Updated Revit Add-ins on the Autodesk App Store

The period from December 11, 2017 through January 7, 2018 was a busy one for Revit-related add-ins on the Autodesk App Store. Eight new (or new-ish) Revit add-ins were published and three new Navisworks add-ins were posted. In total, a further twenty five add-ins were updated.

For Revit, the free CTB Link is for making CAD imports look like they would plot from AutoCAD and is an Editor's Choice Award winner, Dim Offset is for automatically offsetting dimension text that overlaps extension lines, EasyConduit is for connecting families that have conduit connectors, Export to Unity is for exporting models to Unity with materials and textures, The Family Exporter is for exporting families from the current project to RFA files, and Sheet Explorer is for managing sheets.

Though we've posted about them previously, AGACAD's Fire Sprinkler and MEP Hangers also made their App Store debuts.

For Navisworks, ClashViewPointManager(CVPM) is for managing clashes, such as grouping, renaming, merging, etc, CVP-SYNC is for uploading "Clash Test and ViewPoints on 'ifieldsmart' platform," and JSON Exporter for Autodesk Navisworks is self-explanatory.

For updated add-ins, BIMSens for Navisworks, Navisworks to OBJ converter, and OkCommand for Revit each received relatively significant updates.

Navisworks to OBJ converter Pro v3.0

From the Autodesk App Store:

About This Version

Version 3.0.0, 1/9/2018

What's new
  1. Added option to export entities inside SectionBox only: Enable SectionBox from Viewpoint and convert model to OBJ.
  2. Secondary workflow to convert relatively large Model to OBJ. Choose "Steady workflow" from setting option while converting the Model.
  3. Added option to adjust detailing level.
  4. Improved "Hidden Entities" and "Selected Entities" function. Hide entities which not needed to be converted to OBJ. Select entities and export only selected ones.
  5. Improved export time.

Description

About the OBJ format:
The OBJ file format is a simple data-format that represents 3D geometry alone — namely, the position of each vertex, the UV position of each texture coordinate vertex, vertex normals, and the faces that make each polygon defined as a list of vertices, and texture vertices. Vertices are stored in a counter-clockwise order by default, making explicit declaration of face normals unnecessary. OBJ coordinates have no units, but OBJ files can contain scale information in a human readable comment line.

Export to Unity

From the Autodesk App Store:

Export Autodesk® Revit® Models directly to Unity with materials and textures.

Send visible elements of a 3D View to the assets folder of a Unity Project. The tool will generate OBJ, MTL and image files format that can be read by Unity.

Other VR and modeling software like Unreal Engine or Blender can also read these types of files.

All meshes from the 3D view will be parsed and exported to a series of .obj files according to vertices number.

3 grouping options are available: By Materials, By Entities or One Single Object.

Unity can be downloaded from the Unity website: https://unity3d.com/get-unity/download

"Export to Unity" will work only with Revit version 2018.1 or higher.

Image angles from textures are not supported for now. When a Revit material includes a rotated image, the equivalent material in Unity will reset the angle to 0.
